School: 14K120, Carlos Patia School
State/District: D15 NYC DOE
Content Area: Math

Content Area: MSQI
Grade: 6-8

Whitelaw Reid Academy is a middle school with 180 students from grade 6 through 8. The school serves a high poverty community in the Bedford Stuyvesant area of Brooklyn. The school faced the challenge many New York City schools were facing in that the majority of entering 6th graders were reading well below grade level. The principal saw an urgent need to put in place professional learning and systemic support for her teachers to ensure all students leave middle schools with the literacy skills they need to succeed in high school.

Customizing Professional Learning to Maximize Results

School: 10X382
State/District: D10 NYC DOE
Content Area: ELA
Grade: PreK – 5

Elementary School for Math, Science & Technology (PS 382) serves 284 inner-city students in Grades K-5. The school serves a high poverty community in the Bronx with 97% of the students qualifying for Free and Reduced Lunch. The teachers–whom the consultant worked with–willingly participated in the collaborative, ongoing, hands-on professional learning opportunities provided. This involved identifying strategies and modifying them as necessary through implementation in classroom practice in reading and writing workshops.
