Background

The Carlos Patia School had a history of persistent low performance and progress. The motivation for this work was to provide teachers an opportunity to change the course of this trajectory by helping them deepen their content knowledge in mathematics, supporting instructional planning and classroom instructional delivery. The goal for this project was to help build capacity across the school by developing a more robust, collaborative, coherent culture of mathematical teaching and learning in grades K-5, through targeted, job-embedded professional learning.

Goals for the Work

  • Support the implementation of the Go Math program in alignment with the Common Core Standards for Mathematics.
  • Support the development of teacher pedagogy in alignment with Common Core Standards to deepen content knowledge in mathematics supporting instructional planning and classroom instructional delivery.
  • Develop school-wide curriculum maps and pacing calendars for the newly implemented Go Math program in alignment with the New York City Scope and Sequence.
  • Alignment with the Common Core Standards ensured that teachers would address all critical areas meeting the City-Wide Instructional Expectations and Instructional Shifts.

Outcomes of the work

  • School-wide lesson planning templates were developed to support teachers with instructional planning using the Whole-Part-Whole structure, to support content focused on the rigor of the Common Core Standards and to provide opportunities for differentiated instruction and RTI sessions.
  • Lesson structure has resulted in more focused teaching and increased engagement by students.
