Literacy
In a very real sense, literacy is the starting point for student achievement. When students are able to fully comprehend the complex texts they encounter across the curriculum, they are on the way to becoming lifelong learners.
Our engagements leverage a structured literacy framework through explicit and systematic instruction based on the Science of Reading, which enables teachers to maximize student achievement while simultaneously addressing diverse cultural, linguistic, social and emotional needs.
Elementary Literacy Support
Generation Ready supports all levels of elementary school literacy. Engagements begin with an initial diagnostic, where we meet with key stakeholders to understand the current challenges and goals of the work, and then we conduct a comprehensive school walk through. Next, we work with leadership to understand the essential elements of teaching and assessing the reading and writing process. The framing of our work is anchored in current research and practice.
Developing Strategic Readers and Writers
Targeted professional learning is a combination of on-site, job-embedded coaching, meetings, and grade level workshops. Engagements will focus on developing strategic readers and writers through effective teaching and research-based practices such as structured literacy and all five pillars of the Science of Reading.
Using High Quality Instructional Materials and Data Analysis
Our approach to elementary literacy recognizes that High Quality Instructional Materials (HQIM) are key to effective instruction. Our work helps to equip teachers to utilize these materials in effective ways with all students, while being able to effectively use comprehensive data analysis processes to meet the individual learning needs of all students.
Coaching the Coach
We work with your school and/or district to build your capacity. If you already have a coach but would like to develop their content or grade-level knowledge, we can work with you to achieve this goal. Generation Ready’s expert K-5 literacy consultants will collaborate with you to ensure that your instructional coaches have the knowledge and capacity to maximize student success.
Adolescent Literacy Support
Our Adolescent Literacy Services build upon, rather than replace, the programs and practices already in use in your school and/or district. Our consultants work collaboratively with school and/or district leaders to develop an evidence-based and individualized action plan.
High-Quality Literacy Instruction across disciplines
Generation Ready’s approach to improving adolescent literacy is established on a set of research-based, foundational & structured literacy practices aligned with the developmental needs of adolescents. We work with you to ensure that there is consistent, engaging, high-quality literacy instruction across the disciplines.
Our Continous Cycle of Improvement process is a dynamic cycle of needs assessments, collaborative goal setting, job embedded coaching, support and revision. This ongoing cycle adapts to your needs, using outcomes to guide further actions as progress is made. It is evidence-based at every stage focusing on high impact strategies proven to work in classrooms across the nation.
Ensuring success for all students: A tiered approach
Our approach towards adolescent literacy is anchored in ensuring every student achieves what they need in order to be successful readers and writers.
This includes implementing comprehensive assessment processes and data analysis to identify potential areas of support for students, as well as tiered intervention models that include research based reading interventions for student support.
Flexible models to meet school and district needs
After understanding your school and/or district needs, we work with you to develop a customized engagement. In all engagements, we work with your teacher teams to help develop effective professional learning communities, enhancing teacher effectiveness outside the classroom.
Needs Assessment
We work with your school and/or district to conduct an academic literacy needs assessment through a series of interviews and site visits.
The need assessment results in a brief report and a set of short, medium, and long-term recommendations in taking the next steps to improve your school and/or district’s literacy practices.
Model 2: Targeted Practice
We work with your school and/or district on targeted services that focus on specific elements of literacy depending on your needs. Engagements often include some combination of the following:
- Explicit reading comprehension instruction
- Academic vocabulary
- State standard curricula adaptation and implementation
- Multi-tiered student literacy support strategy and development
- Increasing text complexity, diversity, and volume, school-wide
- Academic writing
- Speaking and Listening
Model 3: Comprehensive Approach
This approach is designed to build a school’s capacity over time. Typically, the comprehensive approach is a multi-year engagement, including a variety of workshops and many days of job-embedded coaching every year.
- A whole-school focus: This includes the principals and leadership teams, grade-level teams, and teachers across various subjects.
- Evidence-based research that focuses on the factors that impact literacy: We work with teachers to ensure that they have a shared understanding of literacy learning, setting the groundwork for improved literacy instruction across the curriculum.
